Today’s reading will be in Genesis 28. Read it here!
“I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” Genesis 28:15-17
I recently wrote the first part to this piece, here. In my heart, I’ve had Jacob and his story swirling around in my spirit. Jacob, as we read, is a trickster by nature but God had much bigger plans for his life. I backed up a few chapters and was reminded of Jacob’s dream with the angels ascending and descending into heaven.
The Bible tells us that the Lord spoke to Jacob from the top of the ladder, promising him the land that Abraham and Issac were given. In Genesis 28:15 we pick up at the end of the Lord’s declaration: “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” I was struck by that – even now, He is still with us. The God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob is still here and blessing us. When Jacob awoke he exclaimed, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” (Genesis 28:16) How many times do we walk through situations and not even realize His presence? When things get tough, we might doubt His good plan. Or how about when things get really good for us, and we forget we need Him every day? I know I am guilty of this. I’ve walked through tough seasons and thought surely God won’t be here, and I’ve walked through good seasons not even paying attention to all of the blessings unfolding around me. But let me encourage you, He is close by you no matter the state of your season. As summer 2017 is winding down and fall is on the cusp of starting, let’s remember how close He truly is to us. He is here in our midst, sweet sister, and my deepest prayer for you is that you don’t miss Him. I pray you do not miss all of what He is doing around you.
Leaning into His presence is not difficult, even though we make it out to be. With prayer and the Bible, you are equipped to lean into His word and see how near He is. If you feel distant from God, remember He isn’t far away. Reach out and pray to Him. Pick up your Bible and seek His truth. What He is longing to whisper to your heart is greater than anything I’m able to write or communicate.
If you’re struggling to understand or think there is no way He can save you, I invite you to reach out. With prayer and an open heart, you will see how close He really is. He is in this place, working and edifying those who want to do His will.
